Breeding Koi: Controlling The Population

With most domesticated pets, controlling the population is easy in breeding, because it's just simple to remove any possibility of conception until the time has already come to pass for its opportunity. But it's really quite different with the Koi. It really doesn't matter whether you want them or not, they'll always lay and spawn eggs, and others will fertilize them as well.

Now, since contraceptive methods aren't available for them, you may resolve this by removing the unwanted babies after being born. As harsh as it might seem, remember that if you're going to keep all of the babies, it can bring harm to both your pond and the parent fish!

Now, what would make the offsprings harmful? Primarily, it has something to do with the size that they could grow into. They can grow up to 3 feet in length, regardless of their habitat. Now, an overpopulation will convert your beautiful pond into a wasteful and overfilled ones!

With too many fish living in a smaller pond, the fish themselves will be very uncomfortable with their environment. In setting up your pond, make sure that you have a filtration system that's good for a specific number of fish. Adding extra amounts of fish without adding more system to your pond will produce harmful gases and chemicals that will impose danger to them.

How do you dispose of the babies? There are many ways of doing this. First is to stop feeding your fish the moment spawning has occurred. You shouldn't worry about them getting hungry, because it is in their nature to focus more on natural foods if they don't get fed by their owners daily.

Now, this "natural diet" also includes their young. Even though they're not really cannibals, they tend to eat their offspring when they're still eggs or if they're looking like real insects, and they will only stop feeding until they see their young looking like real fish. This is why it is important for you to start this process as soon as you observe that spawning has occurred.

Another way of doing this is by giving the unwanted offspring away to others. You can always check your local pet store to see if they have any programs that will accept unwanted animals and give them good shelter. Some of these pet stores would even pay a certain amount of money for each fish since they will sell them (but just don't count on this).

Also, you can look for zoos that have this kind of program. If you know of any local Koi society, you can tell them that you have unwanted babies that you'd like to give away. You can also find an online message board or group wherein you can post your messages and notifications there.

Breeding and keeping your Koi is a fun hobby to do, but be sure to monitor their population in your pond regularly.
